The share of renewable energy sources (RES) in total electricity production and gross consumption in Serbia over the past five years fluctuated between 29% and 42%, according to the annual report of the Energy Agency of the Republic of Serbia. The highest level was reached in 2023, when RES accounted for 41.58% of gross electricity consumption, while the lowest (29.87%) was recorded in 2025.
Hydropower plants remain the dominant part of RES capacities. In hydrologically favorable years, the share of RES rises sharply, while in dry years it declines, leading to greater reliance on coal-fired thermal power plants.
Capacities in 2025
The share of coal-fired thermal power plants was 46.83%, combined heat and power plants 6.22%, hydropower plants 34.73%, wind power plants 9.34%, solar power plants 2.20%, biomass and biogas together 0.62%, while other plants accounted for 0.05%.
Total installed capacity amounted to 8,868 MW, of which 8,408 MW were connected to the transmission system and 460 MW to the distribution system. Coal-fired thermal power plants dominated with 4,153 MW, while hydropower plants had 3,080 MW, including pumped-storage facilities. By the end of 2025, wind capacity reached 828 MW, consisting of 8 wind farms with a total of 794 MW on the transmission grid and 5 wind farms with 34 MW on the distribution grid.
No solar power plants were connected to the transmission system, while 209 solar plants with a total of 187 MW were connected to the distribution grid. Biomass and biogas facilities accounted for 55 MW.
Production structure in 2025
In 2025, a total of 34,245 MWh of electricity was delivered to the grid. The production structure clearly shows the dominance of fossil fuels: coal-fired thermal power plants accounted for 63.71%, while hydropower plants contributed 25%. The remainder was distributed among combined gas-fired plants (5.28%), wind power (4.30%), solar (0.71%), and biomass/biogas (0.96%).
The share of electricity produced from RES in relation to total electricity production in 2025 was 30.92%, marking a decline compared to the previous five years.
