Legal Framework for Green Transition: Empowering Women in Energy

Sanja Bogaroški illustrates that green energy is not just a technological pursuit, but also a multidisciplinary effort. Her work at Siemens Energy is an example of how legal expertise, inclusion, learning opportunities and interorganizational collaboration can enhance projects that shape the energy future of the region. Stories like hers contribute to the mission of the “Green Women’s Network” – to illuminate the role of women in energy and inspire new generations to engage in sustainable transition.

The renewable energy sector is undergoing accelerated transformation and requires constant adaptation. What do you think makes working in the energy sector special, and how has such a dynamic environment shaped you professionally through projects at Siemens Energy?

– Unlike law practice, which primarily focuses on advising clients, at Siemens Energy, I contribute to the energy transition through active participation in contracting and executing projects in the field of green energy. I also see my profession as a personal responsibility, as well as a responsibility to society, which needs to transition to sustainable solutions – a process that does not happen overnight and requires patience, strategic vision, and continuous effort. From my experience in the energy sector, the transformation of the industry involves not only technological innovations, but primarily depends on people and building a strong team that shares the same values. The dynamic environment and numerous projects I have participated in gave me an opportunity to view my role from another perspective and continue my professional development as part of an international team in the Industrial Transformation business.

You are currently involved in the entire project execution process – from contracting to realization. Which part of that process do you find the most challenging?

– I believe both processes are demanding in their own way. It is crucial to identify potential risks early in the contracting phase. Equally important is the phase of monitoring the project’s realization, as well as advising the engineering team from a legal perspective to minimize possible negative consequences. At the end of the day, the goal of the entire team is to reliably and responsibly deliver and execute what we have committed to in the contract, as that is the only way we remain a dedicated partner to the companies and communities in which we operate.

Your role includes identifying and managing risks, as well as maintaining global and local training for colleagues in negotiation and claims management. How does training and timely processes contribute to the security and sustainability of the project?

– During nearly 6 years of working at Siemens Energy, I have continuously developed professionally through numerous internal and external training courses, and this growth path has led me to the role of educator. Since Siemens Energy is primarily an engineering company, the role of the legal department is to be a strong support for successful and responsible business operations. It is particularly rewarding for me to share my acquired knowledge and experience with engineering teams in training sessions, as it is important for colleagues managing projects to recognize and communicate potential challenges early on.

Sanja Bogaroški – Siemens Energy

You established a local Inclusion and Belonging Council. What motivated you to initiate this?

– We believe that every team member is equally important to our mission of jointly shaping the energy systems of the future. Siemens Energy is a company that fosters a culture of inclusion and diversity, and that is a great privilege. The unique global framework allows every individual to develop and advance, while local councils play an important role in bringing these principles closer to the specifics of each community.

During my visit to the Siemens Energy team in Orlando in November 2024, I had the opportunity to see the practical application of our defined principles through the activities of the local Council which further inspired me to initiate a similar initiative in Serbia with the support of colleagues and management. Today, I can proudly say that we recently celebrated the first anniversary of the local Inclusion and Belonging Council (I&B Council). Over the past year, we have opened many topics and activities aimed at creating a more inclusive work environment, including a series of “Empowerment Talks” aimed at empowering women’s leadership, fundraising actions, greater involvement and support for people with disabilities, as well as developing culture and community.

What continues to motivate me the most is the moment when I see the entire community coming together around a noble goal and collectively driving positive change.

The Green Women’s Network emphasizes the importance of various women’s professional roles in energy. Where do you see the greatest potential for highlighting the role of women in energy and inspiring new generations to engage in sustainable transition?

– To me, networking and connecting through joint associations, such as the OIE “Green Women’s Network” is one the best examples. These are communities that enable the exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of energy. The path to success is precisely the diversity of members and their professions, empowering young generations to choose the careers they want to pursue, as well as to become more familiar with the professions that shape the energy transition.

What message do you have for lawyers, economists, communicators, IT professionals, project managers, and others who want to contribute to the green transition – but do not come from technical fields?

– You can do it! From the very beginning, I was not convinced that my journey through the energy environment would be possible or successful, but step by step, project by project, I am now in a position to encourage anyone thinking in this direction. An additional motivation is the fact that through our daily efforts, we contribute to creating a more reliable, accessible, and sustainable energy system.
