Large investments in wind and solar energy in Serbia are already yielding positive results, wind farms and solar power plants with a capacity of more than 12 GW are currently under development, and the inclusion of energy storage systems is mandatory for each RES project – these were the messages of the webinar on the potential of the renewable energy sector in Serbia, organized by the Trade Commissioner Service of the Embassy of Canada and the Association RES Serbia, on March 11.
The webinar intended for Canadian companies interested in investing and developing the energy sector in Serbia was opened by Filip Petrović, Trade Commissioner of the Embassy of Canada in Belgrade, with a presentation of the energy sector in Serbia. He pointed to the importance of growth in the field of renewable energy sources, especially in the sectors of wind energy, solar energy and battery storage. Petrović emphasized that these areas are crucial for the future development of the RES sector, with a special emphasis on cooperation with international partners and Serbia’s potential to become an important player in the market.
Members of RES Serbia produce more than 90% of the country’s green energy
Manager of RES Serbia, Danijela Isailović, presented the work and role of the Association in the energy sector.
– The Association is actively committed to improving the regulatory framework and creating a favorable business environment for the development of green energy in Serbia – she said.
She also reminded that the members of the Association represent the largest wind farms, solar power plants and key actors in the RES sector in Serbia, which together produce more than 90% of green energy in the country.
Also, the largest regional conference dedicated to renewable energy sources – RES SERBIA 2025 – has been announced, which will be held on September 17 and 18, 2025 in Vrdnik. This event will bring together leading experts, representatives of financial institutions and investors, which will further contribute to the development of the renewable energy sector in the region.
Currently under development wind and solar power plants with a capacity of over 12 GW
Marijan Rančić, Director of Business Development at New Energy Solutions, presented the current situation and plans in the sector, providing key data on the energy mix and investments in future projects.
– The total electricity production in Serbia for the year 2023 amounts to 37.68 TWh, while renewable energy accounted for 41.6% of total consumption by the end of the year. Large investments in wind and solar energy are already yielding positive results, and during 2023, electricity production increased by 13.8%, with a strong contribution from these sources – added Marijan Rančić.
He also emphasized that projects with a capacity of 7440 MW in wind energy and 5054 MW in solar energy are currently under development, while by 2030, the goal of achieving 45% share of renewable sources in total production is expected. According to him, hybrid systems combining wind and solar energy, with a total capacity of 575 MW, are also planned.
Mandatory inclusion of energy storage systems for each RES project
As a key innovation, he introduced the introduction of energy storage systems (BESS), which will enable stability and integration of renewable energy sources into the grid. He also emphasized that for each renewable energy project, the inclusion of a BESS system with a minimum capacity of 0.4 MWh per 1 MW of installed capacity is mandatory.
The webinar highlighted the growing potential of the RES sector in Serbia, focusing on key areas of growth and development. Participants gained insights into the latest trends and developments, particularly in the wind, solar, and battery storage industries, which are driving the transformation of renewable energy sources in the country. Overall, this webinar was a significant step toward strengthening the renewable energy sector in Serbia and providing support to Canadian companies in exploring and exploiting commercial opportunities in this market.
