World Renewable Energy Day, which is celebrated on April 26, is celebrated this year with impressive results. The previous year was marked by a record expansion of renewable energy capacity, with wind and solar power taking the lead in this growth. According to the Global Electricity Review 2025, published by the Ember research center, the share of energy from clean sources, which includes nuclear energy in addition to renewables, exceeded 40% of total global electricity production in 2024.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) recently published data that also confirms the global growth trend towards RES — the total installed capacity of renewables reached 4448 GW, while a record 585 GW was added in the previous year alone. This impressive growth highlights the accelerated transition to sustainable energy solutions and the increasing dominance of renewables in global electricity generation.
World Renewable Energy Day was established as a response to the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster – one of the worst environmental incidents in human history. This day reminds us of the importance of developing safe and sustainable energy sources.
Growth of RES capacities in Serbia
Renewable energy sources in Serbia have also recorded significant growth in previous years, with wind farms currently contributing 607 MW, while hydropower plants play a key role with a capacity of 3015 MW. Solar power plants are becoming more and more prevalent, with a total installed capacity of more than 100 MW. Progress is observed in the case of whose capacity already exceeds 94 MW, which is an increase of 10 MW since the beginning of the year.
Although they represent significant potential, biomass and biogas capacities in Serbia still have a smaller share in the overall energy picture, with about 40 MW from biogas plants and 2.4 MW from biomass.
Considering the accelerated development of the renewable energy sector, the RES SERBIA 2025 conference, which will be held on September 17th and 18th in Vrdnik, is a key opportunity to gain insight into the future of the energy transition. On this occasion, leading experts, investors and representatives of institutions and energy companies will gather, providing a unique opportunity for the exchange of knowledge and experience.
As the renovation of the energy system becomes a priority, now is the right time to look together at the challenges and opportunities that are shaping the future of the sector. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of this important discussion, contribute to the development of a sustainable energy future and connect with key industry actors!
