SolarPower Europe has officially launched the Battery Storage Europe Platform, a major new initiative to drive forward the business case and regulatory framework for battery storage across the European Union. The platform will focus on protecting the interests of the sector and facilitating dialogue between industry and policymakers.
– Battery storage is no longer optional – it is essential. Without urgent action, the EU risks stalling its energy transition – said Juhi Dion Sud, newly appointed Head of the Battery Storage Europe Platform.
10 times more capacity by 2030
According to data from SolarPower Europe, the current capacity of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the EU is just over 50 GWh. To achieve the 2030 energy targets, capacities need to be increased to between 500 GWh and 780 GWh. The organization is calling for an accelerated deployment of battery systems, with the goal of increasing the number of capacities tenfold by 2030.
Platform as a Key Instrument for the Future of BESS in Europe
The platform will act as a key tool to advance legislative frameworks that facilitate trade and investment in battery energy storage technologies. It will focus on creating constructive and flexible regulations, which would allow for greater market development and the role of batteries in reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
In its recent European Market Outlook for Battery Storage 2025-2029, SolarPower Europe predicts that the total capacity of battery systems in Europe will reach 400 GWh by 2029. This trend of increasing battery storage capacity marks a key step towards energy security and the achievement of the European Union’s goals of reducing emissions and increasing the share of renewable energy sources.
