RES Serbia Analysis: The number ofprosumers in Serbia is constantly growing

More than 4300 prosumers with a total installed capacity of over 84 MW have been entered in the Register of Prosumers of Electric Power Distribution of Serbia. The growth in the number and installed capacity of prosumers is also shown by the fact that close to 48 MW was registered in April of last year, which is an increase of 75%.

The number of prosumers in Serbia is constantly growing, which shows that there are currently over 4300 prosumers with a total installed capacity of over 84 MW registered in the Register of Prosumers of Electric Power Distribution of Serbia, where there is an upward trend, as shown by the fact that close to 48 MW were registered in April of last year, which is an increase of 75%.

The majority of the total number of prosumers is represented by households, which are 3100. The lowest number of prosumers is in the category of residential communities – only four of them have opted for this type of electricity production. In second place in terms of number, but a convincing first place in terms of installed power, are prosumers that are classified in the category of Other prosumers, which are 1200.

Total installed capacity of more than 84 MW

The total installed capacity of all prosumers in the Republic of Serbia is 84.8 MW.

The number of housing communities that are currently registered as prosumers are located in Subotica, Pancevo, Niš and recently in the capital – Municipality of Batajnica with an installed capacity of solar power plants of 79.5 kW.

The Other prosumers category has 1200 producers, with a total installed capacity of 59.4 MW.

Daily growth in the category Other prosumers

In its first analysis in April 2024, the Association of RES Serbia placed special emphasis on the category of Other prosumers. Most of them are telecommunications facilities, of which there are 362 with an installed capacity of 3.9 MW, with the largest installed capacity, almost 36.3 MW, going to 223 industrial facilities. Other economic facilities are significant in number, including markets, restaurants, shopping malls, and other businesses, of which there are 470 with 15.9 MW of installed capacity. Only 26 registered producers are state institutions, with less than 1 MW of installed power, while 18 churches, 17 schools and 7 kindergartens are also in this category.

The total number of registered prosumers by this category, with their total installed power (in kW) can be found in the table below:

There are currently 3100 households that are prosumers in Serbia.

Recently, the Households category has exceeded the figure of 3000 prosumers, which is an increase of almost 300 prosumers in a three-month period. The current installed capacity of prosumers that are households is over 25 MW.

In the statistical regions of the Republic of Serbia, there are differences in the number of prosumers. The region of Vojvodina is in the lead with over 1100 prosumers, which is a third of the total number of all prosumers in this category, while the region of Šumadija and Western Serbia has 613. The city of Belgrade has twice as many prosumers as Vojvodina, i.e. 512 prosjumers, while the region of Eastern and Southern Serbia has 867 prosumers.

There are municipalities in Serbia that still do not have a single prosumer, such as Crna Trava and Bela Palanka, while recently the Municipality of Preševo got its first prosumer.

The dispersion in the number of prosumers in the municipalities of the capital is large-scale. The most populated municipalities have the fewest prosumers – the Municipality of Novi Beograd has 4, while the Municipality of Stari Grad and the Municipality of Vračar have one prosumer each. Zemun (75),  Palilula (56) and Obrenovac (52) are the only ones with over 50 prosumers.

In the Republic of Serbia, an increasing number of prosumers actively contribute to sustainable energy production and not only use the produced electricity for their own needs, but also send the excess energy back to the electricity distribution system. This system allows every customer to participate in energy production and contribute to sustainability.

The importance of prosumers, as well as their extremely rapid growth, is increasingly occupying a central place in public discourse. In order to further improve and develop the infrastructure for the efficient use of solar energy, at the upcoming RES SERBIA 2025 conference, one of the topics of panel discussions will be dedicated to prosumers.

The data were taken from the Register of Electric Power Distribution of Serbia on 27.01.2025.
